Dear George,

Reading Lloyd Snook's addition to the recent reminiscences about the 1970 UVa riots reminded me: I think those group arrests by the police were the same ones that found the Rev. David Ward (from St. Paul's Memorial Church) and Father Stickles (from St. Thomas's) climbing the same tree to avoid arrest. They had gone onto the Grounds (separately -- not an ecumenical effort) to try and help keep things calm, and found themselves in the thick of things, so they hastily scaled what turned out to be the same tree. I think it kept them out of jail. David Ward used to tell the tale with great amusement. Ah, the good old days.
