Downing Smith's reference to the protests of 1970, and your quotation of the story on the demonstration that resulted in the invocation of the Virgina Riot Act, left out the best part of the story.

Among those arrested that night, as the police moved in and arrested everyone within their cordon, were the pizza delivery man coming to deliver pizza to Edgar Shannon on Carr's Hill, and a number of folks walking across the lawn in tux or evening gown, on their way back from a formal dance.

Now those were the good old days...
