Phone Interview by Dave Sagarin with Rabbi Shmuley - June 25, 2004

How did you happen to get involved with the American Candidate series? Had you heard about it before we met you the other day?

No, I didn't know a thing about it. We were at the University of Virginia--I was down in Charlottesville showing my kids Monticello and the University of Virginia, these wonderful things from Thomas Jefferson. And a guy comes over to me and says, 'want to be on TV?'

God has allowed me to give my message many times on TV, so someone saying, 'want to be on TV?' is not such a big thing to me.

But while we were standing there, Keith Boykin came over--he's such a striking young man, he reminds me of my friend Corey Booker who's running for mayor of Newark--but he [Boykin] has some really strange attitudes--and I'm looking around thinking it must be somewhat unnerving to be a black student at the University of Virginia, with all that Confederate stuff all around.

Anyway, then Park Gillespie came over--he knew who I was, which was somewhat flattering, and we hit it off. I agree with him on many issues.

Well, what is your opinion of the series?

I support American Candidate because anything that raises the level of reality TV ... most of these shows are just a sewer of misogyny and disgusting practices.

And I think anything that helps people understand the political process is a good thing.
