Dear George,

As regards Uriah Fields strong opinion on the Confederacy, I guess we should consider denying any history that does not conform with our present societal points of view. Sounds awful Orwellian to me. How would we expect to ever learn from history if we refuse to acknowledge portions we don't like? I guess I will have to give up reading the classics and satisfy myself with the plethora of daily news shows to inform my point of view.

Editor's Note: Following receipt of this letter, we also received clarification from Mr. Fields as to just how far he would like to go in removing Confederate symbols. That is posted at http://george.loper.org/trends/2014/Nov/988.html
