George:

While I agree that 'Using cameras to record the activities of citizens in the open streets raises a serious concern regarding individual freedom,' the problem of people running red lights (stop signs) in our area is even more serious! I see at least 8 vehicles a day run red lights and another 5-10 roll through stop signs (especially on Beck's Hill) here in Charlottesville and in Albemarle County."I'm sure Jenn is tired of hitting her head on the dashboard every time I have to slam on the brakes...

These people are always in a rush apparently but fail to realize that they are extremely dangerous to other drivers. I only hope that the city and county will be able to keep up with the massive number of citations they will have to send out.

One opposing view to this is that "I wasn't driving my car -- I lent it to a friend that day." -- My feeling: Too bad, don't lend it to that friend anymore -- put the public peer pressure on these people too! Maybe we could publish the photos in the paper every day...

I will write to Gov. Gilmore giving my support for this legislation and request that he not veto this bill.

Will Lyster (electronic mail, January 13, 2001).
