Mile 43.0 - Limberlost Trail, Shenandoah National Park, October 5, 1996

Ordinarily, Limberlost is a 1.2 mile accessible trail, full of hemlocks and mountain laurel. The day we were there much of the carefully laid gravel had been washed away and downed trees were everywhere -- all a consequence of Hurricane Fran.

A partial inventory of the damage to the park includes: "13 (inches) of rainfall in 12 hours, wind gusts estimated between 60-80 miles-per-hour, 524 trees down on Skyline Drive, 3 rock falls scattered across the road, two-to-three trees down per campsite at Loft Mountain (Mile 79.5). In all, the damage in the Park totalled over $1 million" (Blue Ridge Outdoors, October 1996).
