George, I would like to believe Rey Barry is incorrect. I would like to believe that Obama is doing the best he can against forces in the halls of government who are more in the pockets of corporate America. I would like to believe President Obama is the best choice for 2012. But like Rey Barry I do not. In my field a person is evaluated on the choices he or she makes. Mr. Obama has made many choices, but in all of the showdowns with Republicans, he blinks. Call it sensible governance. Call it the only thing he could do. But it is still blinking. I hold that it is impossible to gain bi-partisan support for anything in a country where the partisanship of the other side has become so rancorous and unflexible. In terms of fundamental beliefs of what is right and what is wrong, the tea-party is as divided from progressives as Southern white racists were from the leaders of the civil rights movement. Rev. Martin Luther King made clear in his work that racism was not a compassionate option for a civilized society. There was no middle ground or compromise in this regard. African Americans were not accepted as sometimes equal. It is total equality. In the same way, universal health care - Obama's signature victory - has been a defeat. The negotiation of a bi-partisan supported bill was short sighted. It is being challenged in court for the very provision that Obama included to satisfy conservatives and middle of the road Democrats. Universal health care is not a compromise it is a change in direction. Republicans are opposed to it . To achieve it you must win it without them. By any means necessary, because the alternative is insane, non-compassionate and a recipe for chaos in society. We need a leader in government who believes in government and believes in the power of the our elected officials to do something other than rubber stamp corporate America. Unfortunately, Mr. Obama was elected on Hope and he has failed the test over and over and over again. He has been to easy a target for them to dismantle because he is a centrist and they are now being moved by extremists. We need a fighter because we are about to be ambushed and it will be relentless. Who could be drafted to run in this late hour? Peace,
