George, Somewhere in my memory, I recall someone saying, "President Obama inherited an "emergency room" of a crisis." Memories are short and the twenty four hour news cycles enhance that with the media's ever changing "snapshot" of events. . . . the nightmare the Cheney/Bush gang left the nation/world is so bad, it is easy to try to repress that time, to try to awaken from the bad dream and move on. Unfortunately, the eight years of malignant neglect and the never-ending horror and wreckage of that time can not be brushed aside and we "move on." Putting the broken nation back together could easily take decades, it's surely beyond what the Obama Administration or any administration can accomplish in two and one half years! Or, for that matter, in four years. The shift of the republican party to the extreme right, with only one objective: to obstruct, lie , propagandize dupe the foolish, prey on the ignorant and have as its ultimate goal the destruction of a president;to make him a one term leader of the executive branch of our democracy. All of which makes it a virtual impossibility to govern or address the nation's ills. Plowing the sea would be easier by comparison. The critics are quick to ignore the intransigence of the right wing to do anything that might be helpful to the interests of the nation. Better the Right stick to their plan to get complete control of all three branches of government and move the nation closer to a corporatetocracy/fascist nation with most. Americans in a semi-feudal state. The resemblance of nineteen thirties Germany is palpable. When one percent of the population controls forty two percent of the wealth and has an inordinate control of the media. The ability to underwrite those individuals or groups like the Tea Party that best represent the interests of their insatiable greed. Wrapping it up in the flag, "patriotism" and any Dark Side issue they can conjure. All the while making the president the devil in their ravings and rantings, it is clear they are getting the desired results and the president is chief scapegoat. Recent events in the Wall Street area are instructive, not until the protestors reached numbers in the thousands did the media do anything but ignore it all. Contrast that to a Tea Party gathering of gun toting ignoramuses with misspelled signs and the media knocking themselves over to cover every detail as their darlings, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachman urged them to "not retreat, reload." JP Morgan Chase donated an unprecedented $4.6 million to the NYPD. Is it any surprise to see the police wading into the demonstrators flailing away with their night sticks (batons)? It is more reminiscent of the "Arab Spring" As FDR failed to grasp the mood of opposition to Prohibition, I truly feel Obama must grasp the mood of opposition to those bankers, corporate plutocrats and Wall Street crooks that under the Cheney/Bush regime gave us this "albatross" The president is confounded by the gang unwilling to do anything, his critics are a dime a dozen, though his uphill battle has been ceaseless, he has managed to staunch the hemorrhaging of the Cheney/Bush incompetence and we are slowly recovering on all fronts. Now is the time he needs solid support and to hear the 99%! Harry Tenney (Electronic mail, October 6, 2011)
