Bob McDonnell defeated Creigh Deeds in the 22 localities of the Fifth Congressional District by more than three to two

 McDonnell (R)

 111,964

 61.4%

 Deeds (D)

 70,315

 38.5%

For comparison, in the 2008 Congressional race, Tom Perriello defeated incumbent Virgil Goode in a recount squeaker

Perriello (D)

 158,810

 50.08%

Goode (R)

158,083

49.85%

The turnout among active voters in the Fifth in the 2008 (presidential) election was 75.8%, while yesterday's turnout was 43.3%.

And the election after next ...

Tom Perriello will be up for re-election next year, in the presently-constituted Fifth Congressional District. Reapportionment will take place in early 2011, so whoever is in Congress at that time will probably face a very different district in the 2012 election. There's now a Republican state administration and a strong Republican majority in the House of Delegates (but only a slim Democratic majority in the Senate). Governor McDonnell is on the record as favoring a bi-partisan redistricting panel to advise the General Assembly, after years of resisting the notion while a member of the House.
