Deeds received contributions from 2,500 donors, 68 percent of whom contributed less than $100. But a third of his contributions came in big lumps: a $500,000 contribution from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and $100,000 from the Service Employees International Union, and $400,000 from the Democratic Governors Association.

McDonnell listed contributions of $25,000 or more from J. Douglas Perry of Norfolk, a retired retailer; Dwight Schaubach of Norfolk, a construction executive; Richard Gilliam of Albemarle County and Marvin Gilliam Jr. of Bristol, executives of Cumberland Resource Group; W.M. Jordan Co. of Newport News, a general contractor; and Joseph Luter III of Smithfield Foods.

Robertson III, George Pederson of ManTech Global Services, Bruce Gottwald Jr. of NewMarket Corp, Frank Genovese of the Rothbury Corp, General Contractors, Tom Farrell of Dominion Resources and the Devon Energy Corp of Oklahoma City

$50,000 from Paul Singer of Elliot Management, Bob Perry of Houston, a home builder $60,000 from Altria Client Services of Henrico County, the tobacco company; $70,000 from the Dominion PAC
