For all of the 40 years I have been in Charlottesville, the daily newspaper
has been known as "The Daily Regress" and for good reason. There
are probably many communities where the the editorial positions of the newspaper
of record is way out of sync with the attitudes of the community it serves,
but the "Regress" seems particularly galling. The political endorsements
this year seemed more feeble than usual. It was too much to hope that the
newspaper could have seen its way to endorsing Obama but to rely on the
weak-minded argument that the Democratic candidate would somehow threaten
"liberty" was really too much ....
