Charlottesville Area Delegates Vote for Libertarian Party Candidates in Denver. Congressman Bob Barr is Nominated for President

Members of the Jefferson Area Libertarians are in Denver, Colorado, and are pleased to announce that the Libertarian Party has selected former Congressman Bob Barr as its 2008 nominee for President of the United States.

“It was exciting,” said JAL Chair John Munchmeyer. “We Libertarians select our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates the old fashioned way: by delegates at our convention. Unlike the Democrats and Republicans whose conventions are nothing more than coronations, our convention was full of suspense and drama. No one knew who was going to win going in, or even halfway through. And the best part was, unlike the other parties who receive public funds for their primaries, our convention didn’t cost the taxpayers a dime!”

Mr. Barr was selected on the 6th ballot, following six hours of deliberation. Mr. Barr, an attorney in Atlanta and Washington DC, is a former Republican congressman from Georgia. After leaving Congress, Mr. Barr joined the Libertarian Party in 2006. He has served as a member of the Libertarian National Committee since December 2006.

Charlottesville area members of the delegation included: John Munchmeyer, Arin Sime, James Lark, and James Curtis. Mr. Munchmeyer of Crozet is the chairman of the Jefferson Area Libertarians. Mr. Sime of Crozet is the vice chairman of the JAL; he was the Libertarian candidate for State Senate (24th
District) in 2007. Dr. Lark of Earlysville serves as JAL secretary. He is a member of the Libertarian National Committee and a former national chairman of the Libertarian Party. Mr. Curtis of Charlottesville serves as JAL treasurer; he also serves as chairman of the Fifth Congressional District Committee for the LPVA.

Dr. Lark was awarded the Libertarian Party’s Thomas Jefferson Award for Lifetime Achievement for his many years of dedicated service and leadership.

The award is given for lifetime achievement at the party’s biennial convention. JAL Vice-Chair Arin Sime stated that “Dr. Lark is very deserving of the Libertarian Party’s highest award, and we are extremely proud to have him here with us in Charlottesville.”
