We must give credit to the Republicans for solving the oil and emissions problem. Don’t build any more roads and highways, and don’t repair the roads and bridges we have now. Soon, driving will be nearly impossible (or impassable).

I am talking, of course, about the Republican refusal to raise taxes for highways in Virginia and the recent proposal by McCain to declare a moratorium on the federal gasoline and diesel tax this summer. (Anyone who thinks that the federal tax will be restored after the summer is over is mistaken. Republicans would never permit this increase in taxes. The Republican equation is: Restore = Increase.)

Yes, Virginia, there is an end to the road.
