In the November 7 election, all eleven incumbent U.S. Representatives from Virginia were re-elected. Here's a table that shows their percentage of the total vote in 2004 and in 2006. The "Change" column shows the percentage of the 2004 vote by which their percentage of the vote increased or decreased in 2006. (A change of four percentage points from 100% to 96% would show as 4% decline, but a change from 8% of the vote to 4% would show as a decline of 50%.)

There are two Democrats who had a Republican opponent in both 2004 and 2006. Their share of the vote increased by 10 and 14 percent.

There are four Republicans who had a Democratic opponent in both 2004 and 2006. All saw their percentage of the vote decline in 2006 (bold figures). Virgil Goode and Thelma Drake saw declines of about seven percent, with the others having larger losses.

So whatever tides or currents were flowing in this election, they helped Democratic incumbents a lot more than they helped Democratic challengers to incumbent Republicans, at least in Virginia.
