George, In the annals of congressional district gerrymandering, which includes one misshapen district that was contiguous only at low tide, the 5th District of Virginia is hardly the worst example. To suggest, however, that because of the political contours of the 5th , Virgil will win his customary 60% and it is "beyond our influence" to change that is a defeatist attitude that I hope Democrats and Independent voters will reject. Given the current "throw them all out" attitude, with Bush facing over 60% disapproval in Virginia and the Republican Congress viewed as a cesspool of corruption, and given Virgil's relationship with Mitchell Wade and his own ethical problems, there is a real opportunity this year to elect both a Democratic Senator and a Democrat in the 5th District. Democrats here in Greene County are enthusiastic about our election prospects and are convinced that Al Weed and Jim Webb have a real shot at winning election, particularly if the current national mood leads to Democrats regaining control of the House.
