George, In theory the chalkboard for free speech is a great idea. In practice it will be an ugly eyesore covered with profanity and an ugly embarrassment for the City. Its also a direct impediment to walking in an around City Hall. If you want to support free speech why a chalkboard? Writing is not speaking. How about a podium and seats where any would be Patrick Henry could step up to speak? Tyler Sewell (electronic mail, May 24, 2005) Editor's Note: The monument's design also includes a podium intended
to serve as a contemporary soapbox from which individuals may address both
planned and impromptu public gatherings. Indeed, the entire area outside
City hall will become a First Amendment plaza - the 'chalkboard' for written
and artistic expression, the platform for verbal expression, and the amphitheater
for music expression. For more, see Sissy
Spacek Fields Questions at Fundraiser for First Amendment Monument.
