Hello George, The comments made by Terri Di Cintio's lambasting city officials and others who are responsible for spending money to establish the Charlottesvile Chalkboard and seeing it as being an instrument that will be used by Liberals to display profanity appear to be ill-conceived and insulting to decent people who will be frequenting the Chalkboard. I do not believe that the Chalkboard is for Liberals or Conservatives but for all citizens of Charlottesvile, in particular, and others, who want to share their thoughts with people who read messages written on the Chalkboard. As for the waste of money, a concern of Terri's, I suggest that this citizen who is so concerned with the waste of money by Charlottesville would contact President Bush and let him know how America's money is being wasted fighting an unnecessary war in Iraq and most importantly, to kill Americans and Iraqis who deserve to be alive, just as Terri and I are alive. When money is spent on people's self-actualization needs that is a good thing, a blessing, not a curse; certainly, not a waste. I am not alone in applauding the leaders of Charlottesville for having had enough forsight to establish the Chalkboard. I am looking forward to writing on it and reading what others write on it. Beware! Before determining that a word is profane let the self-asserting moralist ponder some of the words that are considered by those who claim to be highly moral, such as, war, kill and capital punishment, to name only a few. Perhaps, other cities will be inspired by Charlottesville's example to establish their own chalkboards or something similar that is designed to encourage the free expression of thoughts in the marketplace. What is a man if he cannot freely express his thoughts? Uriah J. Fields (electronic mail, May 24, 2005)
