Dear George, Meredith's dissection of the NCLB fraud needs wide, wide circulation. And should we be surprised that, with buddies like the Enron crowd, Bush's "Texas Miracle" was riddled with accounting fraud? One of the major challenges facing us today is to find a way to be rid of the fraud. It won't be easy but a popular uprising, beginning in Charlottesville, would be a great help. The SOLs (imposed on us by another George) are part of the same pattern of teaching by punishment and absence of good sense. Given the disaster these two "reforms" portend for public education it is not surprising that a civic minded educator would want to have a charter school for "under achieving" children. The downside of that is that the public schools will be further weakened. I should think it would be better for all kinds of achievers--over, under,
and middle--to stay in the public schools and for us to launch the kind
of counter-revolution necessary to save public education. Yes, I know:
so much easier to write than to do.
