Around town on election day, there were multiple signs and banners inviting voters to write-in Meredith Richards for the Charlottesville City Council.

According to Elizabeth Nelson's article in the Daily Progress, "[Meredith] Richards issued a statement Monday saying, “I did not authorize, nor have I promoted this campaign,” and calling the effort “a grassroots campaign in the truest sense of our democracy. They are citizens who do not want to lose a voice they respect on City Council, and they seek to remind all voters of their right to ‘write in’ whomever they choose, if their choice is not represented on the ballot.”

She has also said she supports the Democratic ticket and is "not asking anyone to write in my name for City Council on May 4" (Lloyd Snook, electronic mail, May 2, 2004).
