George, As you can imagine, I fired off a letter to Sec. Rod Paige taking him to task for denigrating 2.7 million Americans who teach and support the children of American in their public schools. I told him "I AM THE NEA". I am a proud member of the NEA who has worked for almost forty years for children and public education. I called on Paige to resign. His effort to get out of his intemperance only compounded the mess. He tried to separate the members from their professional organization. He should know better since he was probably a member of the Texas Association of School Superintendents when he was superintendent in Houston. As one might have expected, this White House declared he would not resign because they trust him. So much for returning civility and values to Washington. This might be excused if the
remark had been made by an official not connected to education but for
an educator to call any education organization "terrorist" is
simply inexcusable and totally unacceptable.
