George- The first amendment guarantees citizens the right to free expression. This freedom includes speech, to assemble, to listen, to view, and to express one's self in art and music. The expression of unpopular views in the venue proposed raises concern. I favor free expression in all that it encompasses. However, during the popular Fridays-After-Five events in which alcohol is served, I am concerned that these free expressions may not be peaceful, given the proposed proximity of the event and monument. I favor development of a monument situated within a park or park-like setting that invites members of the public to enter, rather than an "in your face" approach to viewing that is proposed. Individuals who choose to publicly express their views, in chalk, on any subject can and the general public "equally" can exercise their right to participate if they choose to do so.
