George,

Michael Smith's letter is right on.

I have been proud to have taken a leading role in the City's support for a moritorium on the death penalty.

The vote on city council for the resolution was unanimous and included, Blake Caravati, Maurice Cox, Virginia Daugherty, Meredith Richards and David Toscano (Jeanne Cox, telephone, February 15, 2002).

As Councilors, acting together, we have the opportunity to cause change at many levels. And rightfully so. It does mean something in the public discourse of issues to have elected representatives supporting a change that is overdue or just.

I will not shirk the responsibility.

Blake Caravati (electronic mail, February 15, 2002)

P.S. I also support the decriminalization of sodomy, but am not aware that it is an issue in this campaign (phone call, February 15, 2002).
