"It is now clear that Congress is the only possible block to the continuing administrative destruction, by Bush's appointees, of the historic Federal protections of the lives, health, rights, property and prosperity of honest citizens. Most Americans still support Bush as President against presumed foreign enemies (the list varies) but people are becoming disappointed in him as President in the United States. They always knew he didn't understand how most Americans live, but thought that in office that would improve and he'd get much better advice on domestic affairs than he now hears from his father's friends and business partners. The most practical way now to bring the Federal government back into the proper role it developed under the leadership of a great Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt (protecting the majority against the excesses of a greedy minority) is by Congressional leadership. That can be done this fall by adding a relatively small number of Democrats to the House and Senate in November's elections. The money-changers now in the temple understand that too, and are now spending millions or dollars in selected States to prevent that numerically slight but powerful overturn. To counter them I hope the challenging Democrats will run positive campaigns to improve our environment, education, employment, protection of pensions and civil rights, affordable prescriptions and health care, fair taxes, continuing separation of church and State; and support for meaningful treaties and alliances with other nations to prevent wars and improve worldwide environment. The movement of polluted air and water and global warming can't be stopped by star-wars missiles or troops stationed at national boundaries. It's been fun for many Democrats to laugh at the more extreme demagoguery of the Gingrich Republicans now running the House of Representatives and much of the Bush administration, but it's not politically productive. The knowledgeable voters offended by it are already committed. Most everybody can agree that everything is under God, but with that off the table, let's admit that with some voters we'll never win against candidates wrapped in American flags standing in churches holding legal hunting rifles over their heads , stomping on the Koran and reciting memorized preprinted prayers and supporting the terrorist bombing of legal abortion clinics. If our candidates can attract enough of the independents and concerned
moderate Republicans this fall, our nation can again return toward protecting
the lives, health, rights, retirement and property of the great majority
instead of the richest small minority. Otherwise, the next two, and possibly
six, years could be catastrophic." (Paul Saunier, electronic mail,
August 16, 2002).
