George, The candidates were all informed of the rules for the Voters Guide. They or their staff should have done the editing; they were all asked to send a photo, either by digital or old-fashioned means; they were all pretty late in responding at the state level. I can't comment on the local races. The Giant/sponsored guide (statewide races) should be exactly the same as the guide sent to all LWV members in October with their Virginia Voter. The person at the Daily Progress who did the layout was using that same material. [The Daily Progress] was responsible for the error vis-a-vis the date of the election and they did the reprinting when this was brought to their attention. I do hope that the questions posed by the LWVVA are helpful in giving voters an idea of where the candidates stand on the broad issues facing the person who is elected to each position. We deliberately made them broad rather than focusing on narrower issues. We would appreciate any feedback on that approach! Sue Lewis (electronic mail, November 1, 2001). P.S. It is very difficult to have to sit out this year's very exciting
races, but that's what I agreed to when I took this position in June. I
really am committed to protecting the League's nonpartisanship policy!
