George,

Just to think Jane Maddux would have the unmitigated gall to use Emily Couric's name in her insipid ads gives me the creeps! (per Lloyd Snook's comments).

I have nothing at all personal against this woman, however, her desire to win on the good name and reputation of a good Democrat is just another example of the GOP's penchant for riding like leeches on the record of good Democrats.

IE: Reagan was a "Roosevelt Democrat", Bush, a "Truman Democrat".... ah, and George Allen.., he is a "Jeffersonian Democrat". It is only a matter of time, when President Clinton will make it to their list.

I suppose it would be difficult for the GOP to bill themselves as "Harding Republicans" or "Hoover Republicans"......with a full house of incompetent losers, where else can they go?

I knew Emily Couric, Emily Couric was a friend of mine and Jane Maddux is no Emily Couric!

I can think of no better way to honor the memory of Emily Couric than to press ahead with what she considered the most important issue in our society .. education. Emily saw a quality education as a means to solve so many other problems in our lives ... poverty, crime, ill-health, welfare and just about every other malady that affects our world.

She worked hard as a member of the Charlottesville School Board, her career in the Virginia Senate and her everyday life to press her agenda for education. I couldn't agree more.

If Delegate Creigh Deeds does nothing but carry forth Emily's lifelong committent to education, he will be a successful, admired senator.

Harry Tenney (electronic mail, November 28, 2001).
