"Katzen's conservative credentials won praise from Del. Paul C. Harris, R-Albemarle, who seconded his nomination after 1993 GOP lieutenant governor nominee Michael P. Farris of Loudoun County placed Katzen's name before the convention. 'The right to life finds a clear voice in Jay Katzen,' said Farris, a home-schooling advocate who said Katzen is best known as one of the General Assembly's strongest voices for school choice. Katzen sponsored a bill this year that would have provided state tax credits for private school students. Harris, who is resigning his House of Delgates seat July 2 to take a Justice Department appointment in the Bush administration, said 'Our liberal opponents may call [Katzen] an extremist. I call him the salt of the earth.' 'They may call you right-wing fanatics,' Harris told the convention delegates, 'but I call you the promise of a better tomorrow.' Katzen 'believes that we are created by God,' Harris said to loud cheers.
'Jay Katzen is a man with a vision. It's a vision of fewer taxes so that
single mothers don't have to work two jobs to pay the taxes that are taken
out of their first job'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, June 3,
2001).
