"'I believe he is the one candidate among a field of good candidates who will add the most' to the ticket headed by Warner for governor, Crouch told a news conference in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, June 8, 2001).

Former governor Gerald L. Baliles endorsed Del. Whttington W. 'Whitt' Clement saying "that Clement's 'election as president of the Virginia Bar Association says volumes about others' perceptions of his legal abilities and leadership'" (The Daily Progress, June 7, 2001).

John Edwards

RICHMOND --- Delegate Viola Baskerville (D-Richmond), joined by Richmond area elected officials and Democratic leaders, today endorsed State Sen. John S. Edwards (D-Roanoke) in the Democratic Primary for Attorney General.

"John Edwards has always been one of the strongest supporters of women's rights in the Senate, and I can't think of a better person for the women of Virginia to have as their next Attorney General," said Baskerville, who is also Richmond City Democratic Chair.

Edwards is the only candidate for Attorney General with a 100% pro-choice voting record and was endorsed earlier this week by Virginia NOW (National Organization for Women).

Also endorsing Edwards were former Del. Richard S. "Major" Reynolds, Chesterfield Supervisor Ed Barber, and Richmond School Board members Jackie Jackson and Bill Laffoon, as well as numerous local Democratic Party leaders and activists (John Edwards For Attorney General [campaign@edwards2001.com] electronic mail, May 25, 2001).

NEWPORT NEWS—State Sen. John S. Edwards (D-Roanoke) has received the endorsement of United Steelworkers Local 8888 for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General.

Steelworkers Local 8888 represent workers at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and is the largest union local in Virginia.

"Senator John Edwards is a true friend of working men and women throughout Virginia," said Local 8888 Political Action Chairman Bob Padgett. "We are proud to give him our full and complete support."

"ROANOKE—State Senator John S. Edwards (D-Roanoke) today released a list of over 500 elected officials and Democratic Party and community leaders who have endorsed his campaign for Attorney General, while Roanoke Valley supporters released a list of over 180 endorsements from Roanoke area officials and leaders.

The list of 529 statewide supporters is headed by U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher (D-9th), former Rep. Jim Olin (D-6th), State Sens. Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax), Mary Margaret Whipple (D-Arlington), and L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth), and former Del. Richard S. "Major" Reynolds (D-Richmond)" (Craig Bieber, electronic mail, May 10, 2001).

Virginia Partisans met on April 11th to hear several candidates and have endorsed John Edwards for Attorney General (Kevin Medwedeff, President, VA Partisans, electronic mail, May 7, 2001).

"The Planned Parenthood Blue Ridge Action Fund today announced its endorsement of State Senator John S. Edwards of Roanoke in the Democratic Primary election for Attorney General.

"John Edwards has a 100% pro-choice voting record in the Virginia Senate. He is a courageous and unwavering supporter of reproductive health care, sexuality education and a woman's right to choose," stated David Nova, President & CEO. "Senator Edwards has been a leading advocate for women's rights during his many years in elected office. As Attorney General, he will help ensure access to family planning services, emergency contraception and choice for women."

The Blue Ridge Action Fund noted that Del. Donald McEachin (Henrico) and Del. Whittington Clement (Danville), the two other legislators seeking the Democratic nomination for Attorney General, have not been steadfast supporters of choice and women's reproductive rights.

McEachin and Clement had supported legislation requiring a 24-hour waiting period for adult women to have an abortion until this year, when both candidates switched their positions and voted against the bill. The fourth candidate, Sylvia Clute of Richmond, has expressed her strong support for reproductive choice, but has not held public office and has no voting record.

"Planned Parenthood trusts John Edwards. Pro-choice voters can trust John Edwards as the Democratic nominee for Attorney General," concluded David Nova.

The Planned Parenthood Blue Ridge Action Fund engages in limited issue-oriented electoral activities in support of reproductive health care issues. It maintains a 501(c) (4) non-profit tax status.
