George, I believe a sportsman (or woman) is someone who has a real connection with the outdoors and an appreciation of the environment in which we live. My preferred vehicle for getting around town is a bicycle, but for longer trips around the region, its hard to beat a motorcycle. I've had a number of bikes since my college days (when it was my only transportation). This one is a Harley Sportster 1200S, which is an absolute blast to ride. We're really fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and being on a motorcycle puts the rider right in the middle of it, instead of just watching it through a windshield. Commuting is a pleasure. I never have trouble parking and the bike gets 55 mpg. I have been extremely impressed with Mark Warner. I think he has an excellent platform and I would urge anyone who has not already done so to check it out at: http://www.markwarner2001.org/knowmark/issues.html I particularly like his views on the environment, education, workforce development, transportation and fiscal policy. Overall, he lays out a very solid progressive program. Personally, the only thing I would have added would be a commitment to eradicating poverty and improving housing as a part of workforce development (although I think this is implicit in many of his positions). And I'm glad to see Don McEachin and Tim Kaine (who are both living wage advocates with strong records on social justice) on the Democratic Party ticket. While Republicans will probably try to paint this as a "liberal" ticket, I see it as a ticket that will be strongly and personally committed to improving the quality of life for all Virginians over the next four years. Of course anyone can have good ideas. Mark also has a very compelling and persuasive delivery, which no doubt had a lot to do with his success as a businessman. He's great on his feet. He is obviously very bright and has a very good grasp of the issues facing the state as well as some thoughtful solutions. I have confidence in his ability to put sensible ideas into policy. The same can also said of Don McEachin and Tim Kaine. We would do very well for Virginia to help elect the Warner, Kaine McEachin ticket in November. Kevin Lynch (electronic mail, June 20, 2000).
