Senator Warren E. Barry comments upon the weakened bill requiring public school students to consider whether they want to say the Pledge of Allegiance:

" 'Any kid who wants out [of saying the pledge] is going to get out anyhow. At least they have to think about it,' Barry said, lamenting the disappearance of patriotism in these peaceful times. 'Maybe we could have a good war or something to get people interested again'" (AP-Richmond, The Daily Progress, February 25, 2001).

Do we need another good war?

    George,

I am in favor of the kind of military draft that would give Sen. Barry 1-A status, and I have always thought wars should be fought only by men over fifty years old. Except, of course, for those contributing left-wing garbage to your website.

    Fondly,

Virginia Germino (electronic mail, February 26, 2001).
