It's Blake Caravati's turn. The Mayor serves for two years. Blake only has two years left in his term and may not get reelected in 2004 unless he gets this publicity boost.

Meredith Richards just got reelected and has four years, so she can wait and be the Mayor in 2002.

Maurice Cox probably won't get chosen this time because he is usually controversial with the rest of council - therefore they won't pick him just yet.

If Maurice and Kevin Lynch get reelected in 2004 then Maurice will be Mayor in 2004 and Kevin will be Mayor in 2006.

Lloyd Snook hit it on the head with the fact that the Mayor is simply a ribbon-cutter for the City. He may be right that there is some ego involved, but look at it this way:

Every City Councilor in recent years has been the Mayor at least once. Who wants to be the first councilor in recent history that has served and not even been Mayor once? Nobody. What an embarrassment it would be. It might be something other than ego...
