"Declaring himself the 'real fighter for working families,' Democratic congressional candidate John Boyd won the overwhelming endorsement of Virginia's largest representative of working families this past weekend during official meetings in Colonial Williamsburg. Marking an historic moment, the Commonwealth's AFL-CIO has placed its full trust and confidence in a candidate for Congress in Virginia's 5th District. Following a passionate speech, John Boyd received a standing ovation and a full show of support from the organization. 'John Boyd rose to national prominence over the last several years because of his tireless work on behalf of farmers,' said Virginia AFL-CIO President Danny LeBlanc before hundreds of labor activists and leaders, 'What John Boyd did for farmers across the country is what he will do for the rest of the Fifth District of Virginia. This man is a fighter for what he believes in.' In his acceptance speech, Boyd spoke of the need to finally have a Congressman with an unwavering commitment to fighting for the interests of working families. 'We need a Congressman who votes for better health care for workers,
who votes for prescription drug coverage under Medicare, and who sponsors
legislation in Washington that will bring home better wages and increased
jobs. We don't have that now,' said Boyd. I will represent the needs of
working families in Virginia. Ladies and gentlemen, above all else we must
never, never, never give tip on the things we believe in'" (From
a press release by Adam Segal and Adam Green, members of the Boyd for Congress
Press Department, July 31, 2000).
