Statement by State Sen. Emily Couric

Thursday, July 20, 2000

Charlottesville, Virginia

"One of the most difficult aspects of life as a politician and public servant lies in the necessity of speaking with the public through the press. I much prefer to talk with people one-on-one, which allows a more personal exchange of thoughts and ideas.

"On an occasion such as this one, however, I need to share some information in as efficient a way as possible.

"As you know, I have been exploring the possibility of seeking the Democratic nomination to run for the position of Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. I am announcing today that I will not be able to continue that effort.

"Yesterday I learned that I have cancer of the pancreas, and that this cancer has spread. My doctors, family, and I are now working on designing the best course of treatment to address this cancer.

"Many, many people have pledged their support to my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor and have actually begun the hard work of a long campaign. I am very grateful to them for their encouragement and help.

"It would not be fair to them, nor to the others who might come on board, to let them continue when I cannot give such a campaign the time and energy it deserves.

"I like to give my very best to any effort I take on, and in these circumstances, I simply cannot do that. I must devote the necessary time to deal with a top priority, which is my health.

"At the same time, however, I will be continuing my work as the State Senator for the 25th District. I have been so honored to serve the citizens of this district, and I cherish their friendship and good will.

"We still have a lot of work we can do together right here at home. Our community is one that is blessed with opportunities and challenges that will require our combined attention and effort.

"I look forward to continuing my work in the State Senate and to helping out in every way I can."
