Dear Democrats for Change,

As I am unable to be with you, due to travel with my family abroad, please accept this brief statement as a small contribution to your forum this evening.

Much like the new faces before you tonight, in 1996, I sought your support for a place in the governance of this city. I, like them, stepped forward and entered into the political life of this community, motivated not by political ambition or some desire for power, but simply because I was moved by compelling, local issues. I saw an enormous, untapped, potential within this city's citizens and I was determined to open up the democratic process to them.

There is something incredibly dynamic and innovative about what you have done as a community-based group. Not only have you shaped a progressive platform for Charlottesville, you have created new forums for the honest exchange of ideas, you have searched and found common ground amongst very diverse groups, and you have finally given to this community a broad-based, inclusive platform that speaks to the very core values of our democracy. In the process, you have attracted new democrats to the cause and have induced old democrats to see themselves in new and positive ways.

Many times during my term on Council, I have had to stand alone on issues important to you. I have always considered it, and still consider it, an honor to stand with you on principled ground. While I often may have voted alone, I always voted with the awareness that my vote represented a changing viewpoint within our community, not a static one.

This time, as I prepare to run for Council, I am confident that I will not run alone. I will run with you and an entire community of citizens desirous of change.

My Warmest Regards,

Maurice Cox
