"Sen. Emily Couric, D-Charlottesville, refuses to join Democrats who criticize Goode and says she has a lot of Republican friends. 'I think Virgil is a nice guy,' Couric said. 'Virgil is Virgil. He's one of a kind. It's probably appropriate he should be an independent. He marches to the tune of his own drummer and I fully expected him to do this" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, January 30, 2000).

"Couric, who plans a bid for lieutenant governor next year, calls Goode 'someone who is not swayed by party loyalty'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, January 30, 2000).

"'Certainly it's disappointing that he turned his back on his family history,' she said, 'but that's his right and he is a unique individual, so so be it'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, January 30, 2000).
