The following is a paid political advertisement found in The Daily Progress, April 21, 2000:

INDEPENDENTS AND DEMOCRATS FOR PFALTZ

We, the undersigned, are middle-of-the-road, moderate voters. We usually vote Democratic, but we are not knee-jerk partyliners. When a strong candidate appears on the ballot, we give that candidate careful consideration, regardless of party affiliation.

Consequently, we are endorsing JOHN PFALTZ, Republican candidate, for City Council. What will the city of Charlottesville be like in 2010? in 2015? Here is a candidate with real vision and clear long range plans for the city. His stated strategy is to create an environment such that young working families and enterprising startup companies went to move into the city.

John Pfaltz is committed to:

* REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC THROUGH OUR RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS

He would help the county create roads around the city, not through it. He opposes the Meadow Creek Parkway

* WIRING OUR CITY WITH FIBER OPTIC CABLE

Blacksburg and Winchester have both taken this step, which is clearly the key to economic growth in the new century. Why hasn't Charlottesville?

*SUBSTANTIAL TAX REDUCTION FOR OWNER OCCUPIED HOUSING ASSESSED BELOW $120,000

Young working families should not have to move out of the city to find lower taxes. These families and their children are the future of our city.

* A RATIONAL APPROACH TO THE PARKING PROBLEM NEAR THE DOWNTOWN MALL

If we want visitors to come to the mail to shop, eat or just to browse, shouldn't the first two hours be FREE? At the same time, John Pfaltz would provide really inexpensive parking for the downtown employees who work there.

* ACTIVE SUPPORT FOR CITY PARKS AND THE LIVELY ARTS IN OUR CITY

Beautiful parks and the many extensive offerings in the arts enhance life in our city and attract people to it.

* STRENGTHEN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

John Pfaltz is an educator. He says that-challenging programs for gifted students and smaller class sizes must be part of the solution. He wants our children to have rigorous training in computer skills and e-commerce.

Charlottesville needs a city council with representation from more than just one party. We seek an advocate for our environment, for our neighborhoods, and for new programs that are sound and fiscally responsible.

The opportunity for change and for real diversity offered by John Pfaltz appeals to us.

JOIN US AND VOTE FOR JOHN PFALTZ ON MAY 2nd.
