Thank you for coming. Today the Sierra Club is proud to announce its endorsement of the candidacies of Maurice Cox and Kevin Lynch for Charlottesville City Council.

Maurice Cox is supremely fitted by background and training to understand the needs of city government in the new century. His experience in architecture and planning has given him a vision of the urban environment that includes issues of transportation, green space, parks, and community design. His record on City Council has proven him a staunch supporter of environmentally-friendly solutions to the problems of the modem city. The Sierra Club is especially grateful to Maurice for his courageous and principled opposition to the destructive Meadowcreek Parkway project.

Kevin Lynch brings fresh ideas, rooted in community involvement, to the Charlottesville political scene. As a longtime neighborhood activist, he understands the needs and problems of a city struggling to preserve its livability. Like Maurice Cox, he has a thoughtful and well-developed vision for parks and open space in Charlottesville. He is also among the foremost opponents of the Meadowcreek Parkway, through his involvement in the grassroots community group, S.T.A.M.P.

The Sierra Club does not endorse political candidates lightly. In Maurice Cox and Kevin Lynch, I am happy to say we have found nearly ideal environmental candidates for City Council. We urge all Charlottesville citizens who care about the environment to support their candidacies wholeheartedly. Thank you.
