"According to sources familiar with the negotiations between the
crafty conservative and gay activists, (New York senator) D'Amato wooed
the surprise endorsement of New York's most influential gay organization,
the Human Rights Campaign, in part because he promised to support the confirmation
of two controversial gay nominees to senior administration posts -- including
meatpacking heir James Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg" (George
magazine, May 1998). "But D'Amato hasn't done much
to push the nominations. So Ferraro, in aneffort to win back the gay vote,
has been making calls to D'Amato's Senate colleagues on behalf of both nominees,
says an insider. Supposedly, the liberal Ferraro has helped convince a conservative
Republican, Senator John McCain of Arizona, to change his mind and back
