"My second concern is for contempt for liberalism that has developed in American politics. I am very proud of the achievements of liberalism in the United States. It's been the creative tension between these two great traditions of conservatism and liberalism that has been the strength of our political system."

"I must confess to a certain amount of mild uneasiness when the President was asked on the Jim Lehrer show here recently about Senator Dole's contension that President Clinton was a liberal. The President responded, 'I'm not a liberal; I never have been, I never will be.'"

"I think that's a mistake. I think that the better answer is to say, 'What part of the liberal agenda does Senator Dole want to appeal? Does he want to begin with social security, or civil rights, or the women's movement, or the environment? What part of this agenda is so odius...?'"

George McGovern, speaking at the Miller Center for Public Affairs, Charlottesville, Virginia, October 30, 1996
