No Longer Honoring the Confederacy: Confederate Flags in Lee's Chapel

That the president of Washington & Lee University feels the need to tread lightly around the removal of replica Confederate flags from prominent, honorable display is amazing. The flags have been removed from the Lee Chapel (the General is buried in a crypt, beneath) at the request of a racially diverse students' group. Said President Ruscio of the removal, “these are legitimately complicated matters, and they are often uncomfortable, too.”

Not tip-toeing, on the other hand, is Brandon Dorsey, commander of a unit of the Sons of Confederate Veterans based in Lexington: “It’s a disgrace for them to besmirch Lee’s military honor,...As far as I’m concerned, they should go ahead and remove his name from the school. I don’t think they’re worthy of his name.”

These reproduction flags of the Army of Northern Virginia have been banished from the Robert E. Lee Memorial Chapel at Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. This photo (taken in very dim light) during the 2003 Mock Convention, features Dick Morris, left, and Rev. Al Sharpton, center, at the tomb of the General.
